roxanne was fortunate enough to have her birthday bash on the banks of the cuyahoga river last sunday night at dave-p’s place. dave has a small but sweet-ass trailer that is located right below the lift bridge at “horseshoe bend” which is about a mile before the river empties into lake erie. it wasn’t until three months ago that i found out that dave acquired the lot in a settlement with the free times, apparently dave sued TFT’s after a jeff niesel article that accused him of stuffing cucumbers in his jeans before taking the stage. the all women jury found the accusation to be erroneous in a trial that only lasted only 15 minutes.
this night was warm and when the sun set the entertainment began. there would be three bands performing for the first time in front of an audience and a couple veteran acts filling out the bill.
first up was “little songs” made up of host dave and leigh who was making her stage debut. little songs put on a short but effective set which had dave and leigh sharing vocals. leigh has a soft voice yet managed to not be trampled by daves seasoned rock vocals. i can’t think of any band that they reminded me of which is a good thing but i’ll describe leighs vocal’s as joanna newsomish and dave had a male-version of a bianca casidy sound going..
“the very knees” were next and after wrestling my way through a gauntlet of young ladies i was able to find spot adequate for getting a few shots but out of the way of the flying bras that were about to take flight. when daves 6 foot, 96 pound frame took the stage is was like ole times but without the drunk chick that constantly yelled “hey steve” when daves band would play pat’s in the flats.
TVK’s has that “perfect guy” sound but with different songs and lineup, matt did a sweet job on drums.
next up was “poor sailor” with mandy that i believe was also making her stage debut. i have to see poor sailor again before i form an opinion.
the last scheduled band goes by the name “mother button”, not to sound redundant but mother button was also making their debut. led by roxannes sister rachael whom i know nothing about except that she is related to rox in some way.
watching MB perform was like being on an island and running into a white tribe of shabazzian warriors, whatever that means i don’t know but i’m looking forward to see them again.
the crowd would not disperse until roxanne performed with her mates: jj magazine. i was surprised that roxanne could still walk none the less perform after all the fire water the shabazzains were feeding her previous.
perform she did and happy we were seeing a legal-rox shouting from atop the monitors.
these may 28, 2006 shots can be found here.
