glenn schwartz is one of the best cleveland guitarists yet he can be quite an enigma after being born-again back in the 70s. watching schwartz play the guitar like it was part of his body while preaching to the packed tavern with quotes like ‘i never cared for drinkers, they’ll always repeating and making an ass out of themselves’ and the ole-time hoople quote ‘i wanna see no flashes, if you want to flash, flash them titties’, directed to a lady who found out the hardway that glenn doesn’t care much for ‘picture taking’ especially with a flashbulb, all makes for a sureal atmosphere.
his once a month gig at the beachland tavern draws a more diverse crowd than his weekly gig at hooples which is mostly bikers and those very faithfull to glenn.
none the less this tavern crowd seemed mesmerized with his performance yet a lil apprehensive to appear having to much fun partically those near the stage.
glenns brother gene plays bass for his brother in his traditional all black. gene is better known for playing bass for the late legendary blues guitarist robert lockwood, also a clevelander..
“Glenn’s talents were no secret to Jimi Hendrix, who asked Glenn to play at his last birthday party. Janis Joplin jammed with him at San Francisco’s famous Fillmore West. He counted Chuck Berry and Eric Clapton as friends. Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Carlos Santana, and Jeff Beck were admirers. [read more]
